Axis of The Liar's Diary

Cog here, pretending to be wheel, or second hand, or protective glass. Or time itself. Though time itself is important, is critical, is something to be considered. For Patry Francis. Therefore we give a moment of ourselves, for time, for a moment, as the body recovers. The whole of the story and the organization and the creation of the day, the time, the moment, is told over at LitPark, where I attempt to keep html marks from wandering off to neverland, but where I take no other real responsibility. I lead you there for more stories than I could hope to create here. Take a tissue, if you're the sort who sometimes requires a tissue. Or take one anyway. And feed yourself with a book. The Liar's Diary by Patry Francis. And watch the snow for a moment. Or feed a bird. Or call a friend. Give a gift.

Blessings.

Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer Go!

I swear to you if they ruin my memory of this for me I am so going to get even with them somehow (rubs hands together menacingly, mumbles "if it's the last thing I do," etc.)...

...of course, looking at the trailer, it looks as if the film has more to do with The Matrix than with Speed Racer. But, you know, it also looks like a cool movie. Fine enough.

Go Speed Racer Go.

Axis of Evel

I can't believe it. I won't believe it. It cannot be true.

[The Associated Press: Iconic Daredevil Evel Knievel Dies at 69]

I remember betting a friend of my father's that he would survive the jump... I remember winning the buck bet even though I'm pretty sure the guy knew the outcome already because it had been pre-recorded. I remember winding up my Super Stunt Cycle. I still have a scar on my finger from reving that thing all the damn day long and nicking my knuckle on the pavement, again and again and again, jump after jump, day after day.

Evel Knievel is dead.

Long live Evel Knievel.

Enviably Odd Book Title ‡ Last Night at the Lobster

I heard a delicious review of Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan today on NPR, and I'm ready to put it in my cart.

But first I'm gonna add it to my wish list, because Christmas is coming, they say, and sometimes people buy gifts for other people and stuff like that, so one never knows. A guy could get lucky.

Have you read the Lobster? Did you love it? Hate it. Feel oddly ticklish when holding it in your hands with your eyes closed while wearing a plaid beret?

Do tell.

Axis of Black Friday

I hate black friday.

I hate the name, I hate the idea, and most of all, I hate that I can't seem to accomplish anything. So, today, I intend to accomplish something, even though it's already 3:30 pm and I haven't really accomplished anything yet. It could still happen. And I'm counting on you to send good vibes. Not just to me, but to all of us who suffer from the blackness of black friday, to the people who do not consider an all-out-spending-frenzy something to look forward to. I want to look forward to something else. I want to wake up in the morning, every morning, and be able to say, "this is what I have to look forward to," and have it be something actually worth looking forward to. Not a Wii for $250 or a Webkinz for 14.99. Not just morning coffee (though that is actually quite a good thing). Not rushing to make sure I save the most money, or earn the most money, or have the nicest lawn (I never will) or the nicest Christmas display (I never will) or the nicest haircut (never ever will).

Okay. Give me some ideas. What do you have to look forward to that is actually worth looking forward to?

Blessings

Axis of Dogshow

Here's the real reason for the internet. See, I watched the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving day, like I do every year, but I didn't get to see the border collie go down and back, because they didn't show the border collie going down and back (congratulations to the Australian Shepherd, by the way, because that is one gorgeous dog), and I wanted, really really wanted to see the border collie (along with a few others which I'll go see as soon as I'm done typing here), so I went to the msnbc dogshow website, where they show each and every of the 150 best-of-breeds doing their walk on the runway (it's a bit of a beauty show, you know, and sometimes I feel guilty, like I'm watching doggie pornography)... every, single one right there... um, so long as you don't mind watching a downy commercial again and again and again... you know, apparently msnbc thinks they are going to make money off this thing... and if they do, the tv writers want a cut... but that's a topic for another post, I think). So if you missed seeing the Cavelier King Charles Spaniel, or you just want to see some gorgeous dogs, you can visit the site yourself:

[National Dog Show Presented by Purina--msnbc.com]

Um, yeah, I wish I didn't have to see "presented by Purina" every darn time too. But that's the way the democracy crumbles. So to speak.

For some reason the aughts are in the news lately. It's a word we're growing to love. And I was just telling someone that I was looking forward to referring to the aughts. As in "remember in aught seven when we thought a peta-byte was something outlandish for our iPod?"

What's an iPod?

Axis and Blessings of Kurt Vonnegut

I've been trying to work up the courage to say something about Kurt Vonnegut, but I don't think I have anything intelligent or important to say. I once met him as a member of the "press," working for the college student newspaper. But sitting in the room with the man, I withered and said nothing while he did pretty much all he had to do to be impressive, which was be himself. So now, I'll post a collection of his books over there on the side, so you'll at least have something to look at if not read. And blessings, of course.
