Some of the best animal pictures are coming from the Adoptable Pets photo pool recently. Very nicely done. And there's simply no question that some of the best pets end up in the shelters through no fault of their own. And if you are looking for a pet, you need to get your fanny perpendicular in there and take a look around.

Gotcha. And good night right back atcha.

To see Amelia's first photos beginning at the horrible place where I made friends with her and convinced her to let me unchain her, click here: www.flickr.com/photos/dogislove/1795544836/

Amelia went to the vet on Wednesday and she was such a good girl, despite her abdominal discomfort. During her exam, she was giving kisses to the doctor :) Amelia has a severe infestation of gastrointestinal parasites...hookworms, roundworms, & TONS of whipworms. Poor thing. Any food she did receive at her former "home" was not able to be used by her body as a result. She is confirmed to be about 2 years old, and will be spayed & vaccinated as soon as she is a little stronger. She is heartworm negative - YAYYYYY!!! I am so lucky to have found her, as our vet said she likely could not have survived much longer with such a severe infestation of worms. She still has diarrhea, but it is getting better rather than uncontrollably running down her legs and tail constantly. Her tail has a place where it has been broken at some point and her callouses on her elbows & ankles may get smaller, but they will never totally go away. Despite all of this, Amelia is happy and has such a gentle spirit, and one day very soon she will also be healthy. :)

This special girl is looking for a home! If you can show Amelia a lifetime full of TLC, email me at ECSescilla@aol.com. We would love for this girl to go to a Flickr friend so we can watch her blossom and be loved over the next few years :)

This little girl has more energy then the other three puppies combined. Downey literally never stops moving. Even after running and playing for over an hour, she still will not sit still to be petted and never stops moving long enough to do her "business". SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE Uploaded to flickr by Doggies Are From Heaven, who said this:
Things are going well at foster puppy central. Dozer and Downey have been free of kennel cough symptoms for well over a week now. They will go in for spay/neuter surgery towards the end of the week and will be ready for adoption. Bella has been introduced to them and they are all playing well and wearing each other out.

Dozer continues to be a love bug and unfortunately I can't help but adore him. I guess that means more tears when he leaves. My sadness is a small price to pay though, to save these puppies lives!

Dozer | from the Adoptable Pets photo pool

INTRODUCING DOZER Uploaded to flickr by Doggies Are From Heaven.
This gorgeous boy is a foster pup who came to stay with me last Wednesday. I have been so busy with taking care of all the dogs and planning my daughter's birthday party that I have gotten a bit behind in commenting and in posting photos. Anyway, he too has kennel cough and is being treated with antibiotics. I am keeping him separate from my boys and Brinna, who is now residing in the kitchen. He is sharing the garage with a female puppy. I will post her photo next.

And yes...he is squatting to pee in this shot. I am learning just how hard it is to get a puppy to stand still for a photograph so I took advantage of one of the only times he was actually in one place long enough to get him in focus.

Dozer is about twenty pounds and he fits his name perfectly. He runs into things all the time and has perfected the art of knocking things down. I have to laugh when he does because he looks so clumsy when he is falling over his own big paws. He is super sweet and loves to just sit at my feet to be scratched and rubbed. He seems to be the consumate "OH BOY, OH BOY, OH BOY!!!!" dog who looks up at you with a goofy grin and eyes full of adoration. He loves to pull himself along on the ground by his front paws and loves tummy rubs. This boy is going to make someone very happy!!!!!

ADOZIONE DEL CUORE cucciole TORINO Uploaded to flickr by Adotta un amico.
Torino, 04/10/07

Brinna has been harder to get shots of because she rarely stops moving. She is doing wonderfully. She has a couple spots of ringworm (highly contagious, ugh!) on her left ear and on her right forehead in front of her ear. Because of this she may not go up for adoption on Saturday. I should find out today. I'll miss her when she goes but I really want her to find her forever home soon.

SWEET BELLY BUTTON Uploaded to flickr by Doggies Are From Heaven.
You must have known I would have to give my foster puppies nicknames. Sweet Bella, aka Belly Button, is doing beautifully. She has really come out of her shell. You can see in this photo she is actually looking at me while I am taking her picture. She wouldn't look me in the face for the first few days. She is having a wonderful time playing with her foster "sister" Brinna. She is also becoming more daring about going for walks and will leave my yard with out her buddy where as before she would freeze at the property line unless Brinna was with her.

It looks like Bella will go to our CMAC adoption event at one of our local malls on Saturday. I will bring her and get to meet whoever adopts her. I hope I don't cry.

IT'S A WEEK TODAY Uploaded to flickr by Doggies Are From Heaven.
The foster pups, Brinna and Bella, have been with me for a week now. Today they go back to Animal Control for a check-up. If they still have signs of kennel cough, they'll come back home with me for at least another week. Treatment is generally for two to three weeks and Bella at least, still has obvious symptoms. I expect to be bringing them both back home. They are doing beautifully and could both certainly benefit from some more foster time. Bella (the golden pup) is growing more confident every day I I would love more time to work with her. So, we'll check back in later and let you know how things went.

FOSTER PUPPY - BELLA Uploaded to flickr by Doggies Are From Heaven.
I got a call from my "boss" at Charlotte/Mecklenburg Animal Control. They had 7 puppies with kennel cough and no place to keep them. all the sick kennels were full and the puppies could not go in with the healthy dogs and spread the illness. Fosters had stepped up for 5 of the puppies but there were two left. If a foster family couldn't be found, the puppies would be put down. Well, of course I could not let that happen!

Friday morning I went in to the shelter and picked up my new charges. They both have kennel cough and will be with me from 2 - 3 weeks until they are healthy. I give them their medicine twice a day with their food. My 3 boys are vaccinated for Bordatella but so far I am keeping the foster girls separate from my boys.

ABOUT BELLA:
This pretty girl is about 16 weeks old. She has had a difficult start and is very timid. In the 24 plus hours we've had her she is already becomming more confident and playful. It is a joy to see. She loves to play with Brinna and is learning to be a puppy by following her example. She was afraid to come out of her crate at first and was difficult to coax out. She is still tentative, but comes out with encouragement (or food or a chance to play with Brinna). This puppy has some small scares on her face. When I picked her up, she was covered in flea excrement and had very dirty and possibly infected ears. Her eyes are a bit weepy as well. She had a warm bath today and a good ear cleaning. She is noticably underweight. I am hopeful that being here for a few weeks with Brinna and my family will help her build confidence and begin to enjoy her puppyhood. She is a gentle, sweet girl.
P.S. - These pups are keeping me VERY busy so I am getting a bit behind on my comments. Bare with me!

Like his famous namesake, Andrea was born blind. Because of his disability, he needs a patient person with the time, and energy to help him get acquainted with his new home so he does not harm himself. Because of his blindness, he startles easily and tends to test things with his mouth which are still filled with sharp, puppy teeth. Therefore, he'd do best in a home without small children or other animals.

Sweet William Uploaded to flickr by Gini~.
Sweet William, or Billy for short, is available for adoption in Northern Virginia, USA, through HART

Billy has a special guardian angel watching over him. Shortly after I took his first kitten photo (below) he became gravely ill and survived a brush with death. The docs had trouble making a diagnosis. He was so anemic they couldn't do all of the needed testing. On the suggestion of a couple of people, his foster mom asked that he be tested for Haemobartonella and that was what the problem was. It is not an easy disease to survive and poor little Billy was just a teeny tiny thing. Little Skittles was Billy's companion through his recovery and it is hoped that the two can be placed in a home together. Today, you'd never know that Billy had ever been sick.

This is a kitten that I inquired about but that my husband said "No!" to. However, I offered to post the photos on flickr for her owner to see if anyone in our area might be interested. She is 5 months old (born this past March), is a good lap kitty (this is a five-year old she is keeping company with) and she is good with other cats. The owner doesn't have any dogs so she doesn't know how she would be with them. I think this kitty lives in the Fall River area but I can't find the facebook listing I found her in. I will get back to her owner for a better idea of where she is.

MY FIRST GRANDCHILD Uploaded to flickr by Nina's mama.
My daughter was just approved to adopt him; we pick him up on Saturday. (After a whole lot of "romancing" the rescue organization, apparently puppies are hard to get and it's very competitive)

Blogged from the Adoptable Pets photo pool by Terry Bain.

Gorgeous. And rescued. And adopted. Originally the "adoptable pets" photo pool was for pets needing adoption only, but I have a feeling there is almost as much benefit to seeing pets that have been adopted as seeing pets that need to be adopted. Seeing gorgeous dogs and cats (and any other animals, frankly) and needing or wanting them is what it's about. Getting y'all out to do something. Getting me out to do something. It's that. All about that. So let's do. Do something. You and I. Shall we?

By the way, here's his momma, who desperately needs a good home.

Tic Uploaded to flickr by Gini~.
Tic and his sister Tiny Tina and brother Tac are available for adoption in Northern Virginia, USA, through HART.

Brother Toe already found his home.

You can tell Tic from Tac by looking at the hair that grows from the inside of their ear. Tic is white, Tac is black. Also, Tic will have gold eyes and Tac will have green.

Make this kid a winner, won't you?

I'll take O and you can be X.

Exactly.

Tiny Tina and her brothers Tic and Tac are available for adoption in Northern Virginia, USA, through HART.

Brother Toe already found his home.

This litter of kittens was discovered in a backyard at four weeks of age with no mother cat to be found. A neighborhood dog had hurt Tiny Tina. She recovered well but is quite leery of activities she is unfamiliar with. One of the HART mother cats took these babies and raised them up.

The camera frightened her and she was just about to run when I got this one shot off. The only other pics I got of her have her peeking around the side of a box to see what crazy thing I (and her bouncing off the wall brothers) were doing. She is very sweet and loving and even gets over being afraid of new activities easily despite the scary things she has been through.

Dexter is the brother of Desiree and Jasmine. He was VERY shy when he came to us...we couldn't even touch him. Yesterday, he gave me the greatest gift. He came up to me and let me pet him...AND he gave me his belly. Thank you, Dexter...I won't let you down...ever! Dexter lives with his 2 sisters at our no-kill shelter until they find homes. Video of Eli & Blanqui playing » from the Adoptable Pets photo pool

For my birthday (today) here's what I'd like you (that's you, you, um, whoever you are reading this) to do:

Video of Eli & Blanqui playing by Marianne Perdomo. Not very happy with videos (my camera wasn't made for them anyway) but if anyone wants to see the girls playing around... This was down in my mother's garden. If you see my other photos that where the Agapanthus and magnolia shots came from.

Blanquita, the white and brown podenco, is up for adoption. She has her own webpage on Dogster now.

--- ---

go down to the local animal shelter. I don't care what you do there, but go down and look and talk to the people or walk a shelter animal or donate some money or donate some time or find out what it is the shelter needs and if there's something you can provide (don't assume you know what the shelter needs, because each shelter likely has different needs and you don't want to end up giving them something that ends up being more of an extra responsibility than an asset). So what I'm asking is that y'all just go and volunteer something of yourself to the animals that need it. You will get something in return from those animals, whether you want to or not. And it will be well worth it.

If you care to come back here and share your experience with us, that would be awesome, but you don't have to. Also, it doesn't have to be today. But set aside some time today. Put it on your calendar. And do it. Because I said so.

Blessings.

You see? Lovely scratch and take me home. Indeed. A face to write home about. So write home. Immediately. And God bless you.

Ack. More kittens. Adoptable. Of course. Because there are almost always too many kittens for too few homes. What will you do about it? What will I do about it? Are we smart enough to fix this problem? Can we work together? Am I doing enough? Why aren't I doing enough?

Peanut » from the Adoptable Pets photo pool

Peanut by Star Cat. Sad story alert. Peanut, who is 12 years young, came to the shelter with his brother, Snuffles, and his two sisters, Dasha and Catrina. Their human mother died in her garage and it was 4 to 5 weeks until they found her. Meanwhile, these kitties were left untended in the house. They lost half of their body weight. A tragedy in both human and animal terms. They were discovered in mid-December. They have been tended to and have gained some of their weight back. All four kitties are very sweet and you can't help feel so sorry for their confusion. Peanut has bunny-soft gray hair and is a pussywillow come to life! He is a very sweet boy. It would be lovely if all 4 got adopted together...but if not, they will live out their lives in comfort with us. They reside at our no-kill shelter located in Central PA. Go to www.helenkrause.org.

What a great photo. And what a great looking grey.

This Puppy Needs a Home » from the Adoptable Pets photo pool

This Puppy Needs a Home! by MutantAngel. Her story is a long and sad one, but the basic details are this-- Someone abandoned her and her siblings, one of whom has died and the other has disappeared. She has been tested for all puppy diseases and issues, and checked out fine. She is very adoptable and would make an AWESOME inside dog. She loves to curl up next to me on the bed or the couch. She is very calm but also playful. She doesn't bark a lot. She travels very well. When she encountered one of my cats, she simply laid down on the floor in front of him.
If you live in NC (around Charlotte), and need a dog, please send me a message. She will be at the PetSmart in Matthews next Saturday (the 24th) if you'd like to meet her.

Well... there you go. A Puppy that needs you. Were you waiting for a puppy that needs you? Chances are good this one will go fast. Maybe you actually need an adult dog that needs you? Have you considered this? Have you been to the shelter recently? What are you waiting for? An invitation? Fine. Consider yourself invited. Only don't say I didn't warn you. Them dogs are pretty near irresistable.

Andrea » from the Adoptable Pets photo pool

Andrea by Gini~. UPDATE: Just checked Andrea's bio on the HART web site and she is doing so well that she only needs to see the cardiologist once a year. It is expected that she will live a long healthy life.

Andrea is available for adoption through HART of Northern, VA, USA.

I met and photographed Andrea for the first time February 26, 2005. I remember it clearly, too, because I'd hurt my back the day before and I was having a hard time walking and even breathing. I couldn't easily get up off the floor once I was down on it. I had to get in the floor with kitten Andrea and her sister to get decent photos which is common with kittens, at least for me. Then I had to figure out a way to get up without alarming their foster family! Very funny in retrospect.

Andrea has some congenital defects that include some heart defects. She visits the cardiologist once a year and is doing well, she is strong and happy in her foster home. She thinks photographers might be the vet. This special little girl has been waiting for her home for 2 whole years!

My picture takin' sure has improved since 2.26.05!

Meow.
