The New York Times (login required) leads their story on the disappearing book review with Dan Wickett's review totals (95).

In that same story, Mr. Richard Ford displays his ignorance (or has it displayed for him):

Mr. Ford, who has never looked at a literary blog, said he wantedthe judgment and filter that he believed a newspaper book editor couldprovide. “Newspapers, by having institutional backing, have aresponsible relationship not only to their publisher but to their readership,” Mr. Ford said, “in a way that some guy sitting in hisbasement in Terre Haute maybe doesn’t.

First, what makes Mr. Ford think institutional backing does anything like what he says? I personally have had quite the opposite experience. Institutional backing tends to mean the newspaper has a "responsible relationship" with their advertisers. Also, most newspaper editors are far more likely to be sitting in their basement in Terre Haute than most of the bloggers I know, who tend to work at Starbucks.

Again from the same New York Times story (apparently that's the only thing I'm reading today), Maud Newton gives me my word of the day: triumphalist. Specifically, "Triumphalist Blogger." I so want to be a Triumphalist Blogger. So. To that end. Always remember:

I'm right. You're wrong. Go to hell.

Wait. There's more. Sue Henderson has an interview with "Karen Dionne, the beloved co-founder of Backspace." I didn't know Backspace from Backscratch before reading the interview. So now I know. Backspace is "a community of writers who are serious about advancing their careers. There are forums about literary agents, editing and publishing, marketing and promotion, writing craft and research questions, just toname a few. Plus, there are regular, high-powered guest speakers." Link.

Another cool thing is that if I follow the link over to Backspace itself, I find an interview with my agent, Jenny Bent, the worldwide rockinest agent in the universe.

You know what else? If you're a writer, you should play the ukulele. I'm not going to tell you why right now. Because I haven't quite figured it out yet. But when I do, I'll let you know.
