Fresh Air for Animal Lovers (and other interested parties)
Terry Gross had a great show for the animal folks out there, though the first segment might cause dizziness and severe anger or even hysterics when the descriptions of animal abuse come about. Still, if you can stomach that, the interview with Melinda Merck is fascinating.
* Veterinary Forensics Pioneer Melinda MerckMelinda Merck literally wrote the book on investigating animal cruelty — a crime that's increasingly understood to be linked to domestic violence. Merck is co-author of Forensic Investigation of Animal Cruelty: A Guide for Veterinarians and Law Enforcement, and in June she will publish a textbook, Veterinary Forensics: Animal Cruelty Investigations. (A warning: Parts of this interview are disturbing).
* Animal Behaviorist Nicholas Dodman
Wondering what your pet is trying to tell you with that bizarre habit or that pleading look? Dodman is the best-selling author of The Dog Who Loved Too Much and The Cat Who Cried for Help. His latest is Puppy's First Steps: The Whole-Dog Approach to Raising a Happy Healthy, Well-Behaved Puppy.
NPR : Fresh Air from WHYY for Monday, May 14, 2007
The best part of this second segment comes when Ms. Gross asks how many dogs Nicholas Dodman has, and he ends up answering "none." He has a whole lot of animals, and talks about his rats and whatnot. Most of the discussion of dogs I knew already, but the reinforcement was good too.
I'm wondering if maybe Ms. Gross had some oral surgery or something... she seems to be lisping. Why do I find that extremely cool? I adore Terry Gross, but somehow adore her even more if she's actually lisping. Though it might simply be an artifact of the podast I'm listening to. Er. To which I'm listening. You know what? I hate english rules like "don't end your sentence with a preposition." I know why it's a rule, and I know when I'm breaking it, but I always feel a little guilty for breaking it without a preposterous apology. For the apology, I apologize.
Fade to black.
