Dead Dog DNA Inside Living Dogs
I keep looking for something to quote from this story about dogs and living, mutating tumors, but every paragraph is so weird and mind-busting that I can't seem to find the right one. So here's this:
Evolution: The Triumph of an Idea
Carl Zimmer
The Loom : A Dead Dog Lives On (Inside New Dogs): To sort out just what's going on with this cancer, the authors of the Cell paper made a big survey of dogs with Sticker's sarcoma, examining sick pooches from five continents. They analyzed the DNA from normal cells in the dogs, as well as the DNA from their tumors. They put the tumor cells in dishes to observe how they interacted with dog cells. The picture they got was remarkably detailed and--please allow me to use the word again--freaky.Hopefully that will be enough to get you to jump over there and read Mr. Zimmer's story about the dog and the tumor and the Tazmanian Devils (no, really!). Bless you.
