USATODAY.com - 12-year-old sticks gum onto $1.5M painting: Apparently, one 12-year-old visitor to the Detroit Institute of Arts doesn't think much of abstract art. The boy stuck a wad of gum to a $1.5 million painting called “The Bay” by Helen Frankenthaler, leaving a stain the size of a quarter, officials said.
Obviously the only way to assess the value of art is by telling us how much it is worth... maybe if someone is willing to spend too much money on the gum the kid won't have to spend the rest of his life wondering why the heck it even matters. Does it matter? Is $1.5 million too much to value this painting? Is $1.5 million too much to value any painting? I'm listening to “Theologians” by Wilco from the album A Ghost Is Born on iTunes.
