deskbrowseThe cutline/subtitle for the DeskBrowse web browser is “Based on Pure Imagination”... but it might just as well be “We Like Money.” Since I've vowed to never pay for a piece of software that has either a decent open source version, I sort of doubt I'll be paying for DeskBrowse (which lets you try before you by for thirty wonderful days), especially given that Firefox is far more than a decent bit of open source... But I also like having a lot of options and trying new software to see what the open source guys might be “borrowing” in the near future, so I'll be giving it a try. I sort of doubt they'll sway a lot of the Safari/Firefox gang, but if you've been using Internet Explorer and have never been exposed to a better world, this might be right in your zone. The DeskBrowse About sez:
Whazzit do? Have you ever been working on a project, and need to get info from the web quickly? Like an image from Google or a definition from Dictionary.com, but don't want to open bulky apps like Safari or Firefox, especially on slower machines. DeskBrowse enables you to have the internet at your fingertips, at the touch of a button. It places a lightweight web browser with very little CPU requirements at your fingertips. Taking the idea from Apple's Window Drawers (i.e. Mail's mailbox drawer in Panther), the team had inspiration to make a small panel that slides from the side of the screen. DeskBrowse has two modes, a SlideBrowser mode, mentioned already, and a Websposé mode, which places the user in a 'kiosk-mode' web environment, ideal for allowing kids to browse the web safely without any harm coming to your system.
I like that. Sure. And I wouldn't mind having a mini Safari or Firefox hanging around my screen. And, well, $15 (retail... $10 if you buy during Beta) is pretty miniscure... But I still don't think I'll be buying it. Heck, it almost sounds as if I'm talking myself into buying the thing and I haven't even tried it yet. If I fall in love, I'll let you know. DeskBrowse
