The Pleasures of Perplexity by Ann Beattie

I've been meaning to say a thing or two about Amazon Shorts since I noticed them (though I don't know remember if I noticed them today or yesterday or the day before... or really, how many days Amazon has had them up, but I haven't seen them mentioned anywhere else, so maybe it's only been a day or so... and, obviously, it doesn't matter except when a person wants to say “I saw them first,” and who cares, anyway?), and I'm finally getting around to it right this second. There should be a link to Ann Beattie's “The Pleasures of Perplexity” there on the right. This from Amazon's Shorts page:
Amazon Shorts are never-before-seen short works from a wide variety of well-known authors, available only on Amazon.com. Try a new genre or a new author--there's something for everyone. Amazon Shorts are:
  • New short-form literature from top authors for only 49 cents
  • Delivered electronically; there are no printed editions
  • Yours forever after purchase; save or print and read at your convenience
What I'm hoping is that Amazon.com doesn't discover what every other major publisher of short writing has discovered--that there's no market for it. Because I happen to feel that there is a market for it. It simply hasn't been presented in a satisfactory manner, yet.

Precious Bodies by Brad Watson

Maybe this here manner will be a satisfactory manner. If they sell a bunch of them, they'll likely stay, because I doubt very much that there is a great deal of production cost for these e-editions. I'm going to make myself buy at least two of them to get a taste and encourage the market. If they're any good at all, I'll likely buy two more. And I'll come back here and tell you how I liked the experience. If I liked the experience. At all. Blessings. Amazon Shorts
