You know, years ago when Konfabulator was just a youngster, I had about seven widgets running around on my desktop, doing all kinds of distracting things for me. I wasted a lot of time widgeting. But then they wanted me to pay for it, and I figured, well, since none of these widgets are actually doing anything that I need them to do, and since I'm wasting a lot of time playing with them, I bet uninstalling Konfabulator would be my smartest move.
It was, of course, a smart move.
I have no doubt that there are more useful widgets now. And now it's free, too (unless, of course, you end up wasting a lot of time on them, in which case it's costing you time... here's a hint... if you install konfabulator and find yourself checking for new widgets even once or twice a day, or you adjust your preference on any given widget once or twice a day, or you obsessively update your Simpsons Quoter every forty-seven seconds, then you could probably do better trashing the Konfab 'cause it ain't free to you, and you definitely aren't GTD).
Still, I haven't upgraded to Tiger yet, so widgets aren't really an option to me unless I Konfabulate, so maybe now that it's free I'll download and see what's Kool (should probably note that Konfabulator is also available for Windows, which gives it bonus points for developers, and is probably one of the reasons Yahoo! was interested, because Apple sort of stole the whole idea for their new operating system, didn't they? I mean, if Konfabulator had started maybe a few months later than they did, don't you think Apple would have sued them? Don't you think?)
Kongratulations to the Konfabulator team on the free espresso:
Yahoo!, here we come!: "Yahoo? Yahoo!
Yup, the big announcement we've been sneaking around and working up to is that we've been acquired by Yahoo!. We're really excited about this, and here's the big reason why... they have free espresso on campus! That's right, no more $80 a week Starbucks bills!
Another reason we're excited about it, is the very cool big picture. See, when we first thought of Konfabulator, one of the key pieces was accessing internet content. Well guess what Yahoo has boat-loads of? Yup. And what's really great is that they're starting to open it up to everyone in a format that's useable outside the traditional browser, as XML feeds. Guess how they're going to provide real-world examples of how to use this stuff. Yup... Konfabulator. So really, depending on how you look at it, we're taking over Yahoo! We're going to make it so the best way to access their data is via slick little Widgets."
So if I download right now, here are a few of the widgets I think that will push me over to the K side.
ClipDrop // How many times have you wanted something that you had in the clipboard three copies ago? Happens to me all the time. Or I don't want to copy something because I want to save what's already in the clipboard. I know there are other utilities that do this, but I'm too lazy to go looking for them, especially when I have this one staring me in the face.
Gmail Check // One of the reasons I hardly ever check my gmail, or use it at all for that matter, is because I hardly ever get email there, and since I don't use it or check it, I never get email there. But once in awhile I get something important. So this might be handy.
Water 8 // A bit goofy, but I've actually used this one before. Counts how many glasses of water you've swallowed in a day. You have to update it manually, of course, but if you're trying for 8 a day and have trouble keeping track, this is one way to do it.
Oddly, I didn't find as many new widgets I want as I thought I would. Maybe that will change with the Yahoo! folks on board. But I think I might pass for now.
Anybody have Konfabulator widgets you're using that really work for you (rather than against you)?
Blessings.
