RIP Scotty / Axis of James Doohan
I remember once going to see James Doohan before the first of the Star Trek movies came out. I was a kid. You know. 1979. So I must have been about eleven or twelve years old. I barely knew who James Doohan was. But he was speaking at the college. Central Washington University, I think. He showed clips of the new movie they were making. Bloopers. Probably he was mostly doing the circuit to drum up support for the movie. Afterward he signed autographs, and I stood in line and shook his hand and he signed my ticket. My most vivid memory of the experience was his smile. How friendly he seemed.
I guess the audience was likely filled with trekkies. But I was clueless. I didn't know a trekkie from a pastille. But I knew I'd just met someone genuine. Someone real. If that guy is famous, so be it. Even when I saw him later, in gigantic movies with enormous budgets, I could see him in that line, smiling, just being himself, happy to be here, and happy to see you.
Rest in peace.
