Frankly, My Dear, I Don't Give a Damn (and Your Little Dog, Too)

AFI's 100 YEARS...100 MOVIE QUOTES: "Great movie quotes become part of our cultural vocabulary. When you consider that any phrase from American film is eligible, you realize this is our most subjective topic to date. We expect nothing less than a war of words as we reignite interest in classic American movies." --Jean Picker Firstenberg, Director and CEO, American Film Institute
I used to play a sort of made-up game with my roomate just out of grad school. One of us would come up with a movie quote and try to stump the other. Of course it was always fun to get one that was just barely out of reach, so we could smugly watch as our friend writhed in agony trying to remember. One of my favorites (and it was never anybody else's favorite, and I can't really explain why it was my favorite) went like this: "Not a big fish guy." I guess I like it because it was never memorable to anybody but me. But it never worked in the game because it was so far out of reach that nobody cared to even think about it. Almost immediately they'd toss up their hands and say, "I give... no idea." "The Sure Thing," I'd say. "Really?" "Really." "Huh." "Did you know that was directed by Rob Reiner?" "No. I didn't know that." And here's where I'd have to be careful. If I kept on like this, becoming the geeky, I know everything about The Sure Thing guy, I was sure to end the game. And I can feel your eyes getting glassy as I write about it. So sorry. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the AFI's list of top 100 movie quotes. Most of them are so famous that there's not really a challenge in using them in the game. We never really had winners or losers. It was just fun to play. Fun to get stumped for awhile, and finally figure out what that movie was. I'll list a few more of my favorites here just for old time sake. Can you guess which quote belongs to which movie? 1. "Look into your heart." 2. "Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo." 3. "Ten ought to do it, don't you think? You think we need one more? You think we need one more. All right, we'll get one more." 4. "Just smile, Loretta, so you don't look like you're being held up." 5. "I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days." Have fun.
