Are Rainbow Parties for Real?

How is it that we end up examining the "reality" of a book of fiction (Rainbow Party being the current subject of examination) so very closely? Can a book not be judged based on anything but "does this really happen"? Can little girls really go down rabbit holes and eat cakes to get bigger and smaller?
Are these college oral-sex parties for real?: "The book is less salacious than the subject matter would suggest. Its message is actually rather grim, emphasizing adolescent anxieties about image, adequacy and friendships."
And what if it wasn't "less salacious than the subject matter would suggest?" Would it matter? Maybe, parent by parent. Luckily, though, when we make a big deal about how awfully smutty a book is, that book tends to become a bestseller, even if it's trash. People will never learn. Parents especially. I know because I happen to be one.
