New York Times Announces Blogs Already Passe
Oh, wait, no... they actually reported that they might start their own blog as part of an effort to "increase readers' confidence in the newspaper." Which obviously amounts to the same thing. Does this mean the gray lady is taking her cues from the likes of The Spokesman-Review? Maybe a little bit. But my guess is that it's too late, and any sort of blog effort by the NYT will end up being more of the same. I should note that I love the NYT. I would read it if they would deliver it to my house. And I used to make my classes read it (we could have it delivered to campus, but not to our homes). But I fail to see how blogs could increase confidence in the paper. It seems more like a kneejerk reaction to me (although a rather slow one). "Look. People read blogs. People get "news" from blogs. They trust bloggers. Let's have our own blog. Maybe people will trust us then." I hate this kind of reaction. Just publish a good paper, okay? Don't try to compete with television or blogs or talk radio or podcasts or anything else. Just be a good paper. Does nobody want a good paper anymore? I think that they do. Be a good paper. I will read you. Link: Gaining Confidence: 'N.Y.
