Here are the important aspects of the Carl's Jr. / Paris Hilton ad: 1. Paris Hilton isn't wearing much. 2. It's very difficult to tell that she's attempting to sell a hamburger. My guesses when first seeing the ad were that she was selling either cars or soap. 3. the ad features a girlbandrock version of Cole Porter's "I Love Paris" (performed rather visciously by Eleni Mandell ). 4. Right there at the very end is a hamburger. Apparently the hamburger is spicy. Thus Spicy Paris. 5. Given the amount of exposure this ad is currently receiving on the internet, they never have to play it on television again. You can watch it over and over again online, and you can see the internet-only cut (too "hot" for tv), see a canned interview spot with Paris, and watch the corporate commentary. And every blogger with half an ounce of testosterone is blogging the Carl's Jr. site. Including me.
So, Carl's, you know, don't cave in to pressure by promising to take it off the air. But don't put it back on either. The more people wail about it being "soft porn," the more it will be loaded and viewed and talked about and taken to pieces.
Whether or not Paris washing a car in a black bathing suit sells hamburgers remains to be seen. Personally, I'm not particularly hungry after seeing the ad. But I'm a few other things.
My favorite quote from the corporate bubbleheads inside the link: Carl's Jr. not sorry for sexy Paris Hilton ad - May. 25, 2005: "Burger chain Carl's Jr. tells watchdog group infuriated over scantily clad soap-up to 'get a life.'"
