Candy War

What is the Candy War? The site is best described by the folks who created it at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln:
Using lab equipment and techniques available to upper-level high school and beginning-level college students, how many differences can be found between M&M's and Smarties?
M&M's are, of course, made by M&M Mars, and Smarties by Nestl. A simple description of the two might make them sound very much the same. A round chocolate saucer-shaped yummy with a hard candy shell. But anybody who's eaten more than one or two of each knows that there's a world of difference. The class uses statistical analysis, chemical composition, color analysis, and response to heat/fat extraction (among other things) to describe just what it is that's different about these two products. Of course the kicker is at the very end of the page in the Conclusions section, which describes the important bit (not at all scientific, but a thousand times more more important to the average kid in the candy store):
The candy shell on the Smarties tastes sweeter than that of the M&M's®. The chocolate in the M&M's feels a little more solid, and is not quite as sweet as the Smarties' chocolate. Two out the three of us preferred the taste of M&M's.
For the record, I prefer M&Ms. Link: Candy War Home Page. Technorati Tags: , , , , , , ,
